About the Event
Study on Access to Public Spaces for Women at Night in Major Metro Cities in India”:
Background & Rationale
In India’s rapidly urbanizing landscape, metro cities are becoming 24x7 hubs of employment, culture, transit, and lifestyle. However, access to public spaces—such as streets, parks, markets, bus stands, railway stations, and recreational zones—remains unequal, especially after dark. Despite progressive policies on gender inclusion, many women across socio-economic classes continue to face constraints due to safety concerns, social stigma, poor urban design, inadequate lighting, and limited public transportation options at night.
Issues of access at night are not merely about safety; they reflect broader gendered power dynamics around visibility, participation, and freedom in urban life. The lack of safe and inclusive public environments limits women’s participation in the night economy, restricts employment options (e.g., shift work), and undermines their right to the city.
